Tom Shanahan, Executive Coach, Faculty, Speaker

Tom Shanahan is a speaker, instructor, coach, and facilitator at roofing and construction industry educational and governmental events. He is known for developing and delivering educational programs; his expertise regarding roofing safety and health concerns; involvement and contribution to health and safety issues affecting the industry on national and international levels; contributions to National Roofing Contractors Association’s (NRCA) Professional Roofing magazine; and effective communication, leadership, management, and training strategies. 

Shanahan also directs NRCA's executive leadership programs. NRCA's Future Executives and Executive Management Institutes are held at Northwestern's Kellogg School. As part of the faculty, he teaches strategic planning, coaching, and risk management courses and provides company-specific coaching to more than 150 roofing contractor organizations. He has directed NRCA University, the National Roofing Legal Resource Center, NRCA's international membership, state legislative and regulatory activities, and the Roofing Alliance at various times throughout his tenure.

Throughout his tenure at NRCA, Shanahan has been responsible for directing its risk management section, where he oversees health, safety, and insurance matters impacting the roofing industry. Activities include representing NRCA to regulatory agencies like OSHA and DOT, developing health and safety educational materials and classes, and overseeing business and health insurance programs for members. He was appointed by the Secretary of Labor to sit as a management representative on OSHA's Advisory Council on Construction Safety and Health and currently serves on the NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda's Construction Sector Council and is chair of its Falls Workgroup. This workgroup considers research and initiates national efforts to reduce fall-related incidents in the construction industry.  

Shanahan holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and a graduate certificate in leadership coaching from Georgetown University.
